5 certifications UK employers are hiring for in 2026

Not all certifications are equal, and the gap is wider than the marketing suggests

There are hundreds of professional certifications out there. Scroll through any training provider's website and you'll find dozens of options, each one promising career advancement and higher salaries. It's easy to feel paralysed by the choice and end up doing nothing for another six months.

Let's cut through it. Based on UK job posting data, these are the five certifications UK employers are actually putting into their job requirements right now. Not the ones with the slickest marketing. The ones that get you to the interview stage.

1. AWS Solutions Architect Associate

Exam: $150 USD (~£120) · Study time: 2-3 months · UK salary: £51,831 - £68,505

If you want the one certification that appears on more UK IT job postings than any other, this is it. Cloud computing is the most in-demand skill in the UK market, and AWS holds the largest share. Solutions Architect Associate tests whether you can actually design systems on AWS, not just talk about them.

The exam is scenario-based. You get a business problem and have to pick the best AWS solution. That means you need hands-on experience, not just video knowledge. Budget 2-3 months of evenings and weekends. It's a real commitment, but the salary data speaks for itself.

If you're new to cloud, start with Cloud Practitioner first, then move to this. If you've got IT experience, skip straight here.

Cloud is the biggest technical skill employers are looking for. But not every high-demand role is technical.

2. PRINCE2 Foundation

Exam: £543 (bundle) · Study time: 2-4 weeks · UK salary: £35,000 - £70,000+

PRINCE2 is the project management certification that UK employers expect. Especially in government, consultancy, and large enterprise. If a PM job posting in the UK mentions a certification, it's almost always this one.

Version 7 (released September 2023) made it more relevant than it's been in years. More focus on people, less on rigid process. The Foundation exam takes 2-4 weeks to prepare for, making it one of the fastest certifications on this list to earn.

The APM 2025 salary survey found the average project professional salary rose 10% to £52,500. In London and the South East, PRINCE2 holders regularly clear £70,000.

So cloud skills build the systems, and project management keeps them on track. But who protects them?

3. CompTIA Security+

Exam: £164 (UK academic) · Study time: 8-10 weeks · UK salary: £35,000 - £60,000+

Cybersecurity is the second-hottest skill category in UK hiring, and Security+ is the way most people get their foot in the door. It's recognised by the UK Ministry of Defence, required for US DoD contractor roles, and listed on more cyber job postings than any other entry-level cert.

The exam covers network security, threats, cryptography, and security operations across five domains. It's harder than PRINCE2 Foundation but the self-study resources are outstanding. Professor Messer's free video course alone covers every objective.

At £164 for the exam and free study materials available, the ROI on Security+ is arguably the best of any certification on this list.

Security+ has the strongest ROI. But the fastest-growing certification on this list might surprise you.

4. AWS Certified AI Practitioner

Exam: $100 USD (~£80) · Study time: 2-4 weeks · UK salary: £45,000 - £90,000+ (AI/ML roles)

This is the newest certification on the list, launched by AWS in October 2024, and it's growing faster than any other. AI literacy is rapidly becoming a baseline expectation for technical professionals in the UK, not a nice-to-have.

The exam covers AI/ML fundamentals, AWS AI services like SageMaker and Bedrock, responsible AI practices, and generative AI concepts. It's foundational-level, so you don't need deep technical experience. The UK government has committed £1.6 billion through UKRI for AI development over 2026-2030, and employers are following suit. Two to four weeks of study and £80 for the exam makes this one of the quickest ways to show you're keeping pace.

5. Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104)

Exam: ~£165 · Study time: 2-3 months · UK salary: £40,000 - £65,000

AWS leads the cloud market globally, but Azure dominates in organisations already running Microsoft. If you work in a company that uses Microsoft 365, Teams, and Active Directory, their cloud infrastructure is almost certainly Azure. And someone needs to manage it.

AZ-104 covers identity management, storage, compute, networking, and monitoring in Azure. It's a practical, hands-on certification that requires real Azure experience. Microsoft Learn offers free learning paths that map directly to the exam objectives, which keeps costs down.

So which one should you get?

That depends entirely on where you want to go. Not on which cert has the highest average salary or the most job postings. Here's our honest take:

  • Going into project management in the UK? PRINCE2 first. No question.
  • Want to work in cloud? Start with AWS Cloud Practitioner, then Solutions Architect.
  • Interested in cybersecurity? Security+ is the entry point everyone recognises.
  • Want to add AI to your existing skills? AWS AI Practitioner is a fast, cheap win.
  • Already in a Microsoft shop? AZ-104 is the obvious choice.

Here's something worth thinking about: holding certifications across different domains (like PRINCE2 + AWS, or Security+ + Azure) creates a compound effect. UK job board data suggests dual certifications can boost salary offers by roughly 40% compared to a single cert. You don't have to pick just one.
